iOS 26
Every iOS release buries its best ideas three menus deep, and iOS 26 is no different. Some of the new features are genuinely life improving. Some depend on your model in ways the keynote never slowed down to explain. Here is the honest tour: what to turn on, the exact path to each switch, and which iPhones actually get it.
Settings, Apps, Phone, Screen Unknown Callers: choose Ask Reason. Now, when a number you do not know calls, your iPhone asks the caller to state their name and why they are calling before your phone ever rings. You see the answer as text and decide. Spam callers hang up. Real ones, the delivery driver, the clinic, tell you who they are. This is the single best quality of life feature in iOS 26.
Settings, Apps, Phone, Hold Assist Detection: on. When a company puts you on hold, your iPhone listens for the moment a human picks up and alerts you to rejoin the call. It is on the same Phone settings page as Call Screening, and together they give you back a genuinely rude amount of time.
Settings, Battery, Power Mode, Adaptive Power: on. On supported models, the phone makes small, careful performance adjustments when your usage runs high, so the battery lasts longer without the blunt instrument that is Low Power Mode. Honest note: this one is limited to the iPhone 17 family and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. If your Power Mode page does not show it, your model does not have it, and no setting anywhere else unlocks it.
On Apple Intelligence models (iPhone 15 Pro and later, including the iPhone 17 family), Messages can translate texts automatically as they arrive, and your replies go back in the other person's language. Open a conversation, tap the person's name at the top, and turn on Automatically Translate, then pick the language. If you chat with family, clients or sellers in another language, this quietly changes everything.
In any Messages conversation, tap the plus button and choose Polls. Weekend plans, restaurant choices, the family vote on holiday dates: it takes ten seconds and ends the forty message scroll of doom. Everyone in the chat can vote and add options. It is small, and you will use it weekly.
Touch and hold your lock screen, tap Customize, and photos that support it gain a spatial effect: the subject lifts from the background and shifts gently as you tilt the phone. It makes an ordinary photo feel like a tiny window. Not every photo works. Portraits and clear subjects behave best. Try three or four and keep the one that makes you smile.
Silence Unknown Callers, completely. On that same screening page, Silence is the tempting option, and it is the wrong one for most people. Banks, clinics and delivery drivers call from unknown numbers too. Ask Reason gets you the quiet without the missed calls.
Visited Places in Maps. Maps can keep a private record of places you have been, which makes finding that one cafe again genuinely easy. It is also a record of where you have been. Plenty of people will love it, plenty will not. This one is a values call, not a setting, so make it deliberately either way. Find it in Settings, Apps, Maps.
AutoMix in Music. Apple Music can now blend songs together like a DJ, and it is fun. It is also opt in per playlist for a reason. For workout playlists, go ahead. For an album an artist sequenced on purpose, leave it off and hear it the way it was made.
Turn on Call Screening with Ask Reason, Hold Assist, and Adaptive Power if your model has it. Try Live Translation and a lock screen Spatial Scene this week. Make the privacy flavoured choices on purpose. That is the iOS 26 upgrade actually feeling like an upgrade.
